Lorem ipsum is scrambled placeholder text: nonsense that looks like Latin but is not meant to be read. Its opening, lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, is a garbled fragment lifted from De finibus bonorum et malorum, a treatise on ethics that Cicero wrote in 45 BC. Somewhere along the way a printer chopped and reshuffled the passage, and the mangled version stuck. Typesetters have leaned on it since the 1500s to fill layouts with believable text before the real words exist.

The moment a reviewer sees an actual sentence, they start editing the words instead of assessing the design, and the meeting drifts into a debate over a headline rather than the grid. Lorem ipsum keeps attention where it belongs by giving the eye something shaped like text without any meaning to react to.

It also beats lazy filler like repeating asdf or a single word over and over. That kind of filler clumps into unnatural blocks and hides the spacing problems you are trying to spot, because real paragraphs have varied word and sentence lengths. When Not to Use It

Placeholder text has slipped into published books, live websites, and printed marketing that shipped before anyone swapped in the real words. A quick search before launch, and a habit of never pasting lorem into a field that could go live, saves a great deal of embarrassment.

Better alternatives sometimes

Lorem ipsum is ideal early, when the copy genuinely does not exist yet. Later in a project, real content is better, because only real headlines and paragraphs reveal whether the design survives an awkward long title or a stubbornly short one. A middle option is content shaped dummy text, placeholder written to the rough length and tone of the eventual copy, which stress tests the layout more honestly than Latin while still signaling clearly that it is not final.
